The time has come again when parents are asking us about university pre degree courses for their children just completing SS3 or Year 11. Finding the Sixth form College for pre degree courses and the University that's right for your son or daughter can be a challenge. Unfortunately with falling oil prices and the devaluation of the naira which has made education abroad very expensive now, it is very important parents to seek the best counsel before making decisions. It will now cost between 7 million and 12 million naira to send a child for foundation or A level for 1 year and this excludes cost of ticket, visas etc. In the face of these huge costs, Nigerian parents who are struggling with these costs are better advised to patronize Nigerian Schools, sixthforms, and until we address the quality and capacity issues in our Universities, Nigerian parents might continue to vote with their feet and patronize universities abroad. The Government is advised to curb the attendant capital flight and brain drain issues by providing a better business environment for the growth and expansion of quality education institutions in the country.

Are you sure your Teen is Ready for University this September?
Are you sure your Teen is Ready for University this September? Too many Nigerian parents are sending their teenagers abroad too early!
It is the time of the year parents, teachers, counselors all focus on one subject: What happens after SS3 or Year 11? It has now become fashionable for many SS3 or IGCSE student to pronounce happily to their friends that they are off to University and just can’t wait for September. But the truth be told are they really ready for University? Are parents thinking deeply before sending their young teens merrily off to University at the tender ages of 16 or 17. The transition from Secondary school to University is a difficult process. A lot of students complete SS3 or IGCSE at the age of 16 leaving them ill prepared to face the rigors of university life at that age. Some teenagers are emotionally and academically prepared for the challenges of University, but how many Nigerian 16 year olds are truly ready for that independent living far away from home in a different culture with people from diverse back grounds?

Our Schools must prepare our Students for the World of Work
Young people in schools today will be joining the work force tomorrow. The question therefore is whether Nigerian schools are preparing students for the workplace or just preparing them to memorize and regurgitate during examinations. Nigerian students need to move away from rote learning and memorization to understanding what is being taught with the objective of using it creatively to solve problems and come up with creative solutions and products in the 21st century work place. Schools should teach technical, innovation, creative and generic skills needed in the 21st century workplace.
